In the United States, we have already seen how quickly political rhetoric can turn into hostile laws. Under Donald Trump, migrants faced family separations, forced deportations, and constant fear. Rights that once felt permanent were stripped away almost overnight — including the fact that immigrants with no criminal record are now the largest group held in detention. (The Guardian, 2025)
Detailed investigations expose “deportation hubs” where due process is denied, and thousands of migrants “disappear” into the system. (The Guardian Interactive, 2025) A respected human-rights-organisation report confirms that the U.S. government is forcibly rendering migrants abroad, effectively removing them without transparency or legal recourse. (Human Rights First, 2025) Even broad media summaries show how many have been arrested under Trump’s policies — “Who has been arrested by ICE under Trump?” (BBC News, 2025)
The UK must not follow this path. And yet, Reform UK is proposing exactly that: ending indefinite leave to remain and pushing legal migrants out of their homes.
