About Me

My name is Neila Burgess. I came to the UK in 2020 during the “Boris wave,” leaving Spain where opportunities were scarce. Here, I built a life: I met my husband, started a family, and found a community I love.

But my journey has also shown me how fragile security can be for many migrants in the UK. Even with settled status, our futures can be shaken by sudden political shifts. That is why I have dedicated myself to raising awareness, sharing my story, and standing up for the rights of others who face the same struggles.

I am a woman of faith — a proud member of a church in Scotland — and I believe that God calls us to love our neighbours and welcome the stranger. My activism is rooted in this belief: that compassion, justice, and solidarity must guide how we treat one another.

I am also neurodiverse and an advocate for neurodiverse rights. Too often, neurodiverse voices are overlooked or silenced. I work to change that, showing that diversity — in minds, in backgrounds, in experiences — strengthens communities rather than divides them.

Currently, I am in the final year of my Bachelor’s degree in Social Science at the Open University. My studies equip me to analyse social and political systems, but my passion comes from lived experience. I campaign because I know what is at stake: families, homes, and futures.

This is why I created the campaign “Love Thy Neighbour” — to build awareness, to defend migrant rights, and to remind society that hate is never the way forward.
